Chinese automaker GAC Aion, a sub-brand of GAC Group, has officially launched the Aion UT Super on November 9. The model is a joint project between GAC, CATL, and JD.com, designed to accelerate growth in China’s compact EV segment.
CATL’s 99-Second Battery Swap System
The Aion UT Super adopts CATL’s Choco-SEB (Swapping Electric Block) system, allowing drivers to replace batteries in as little as 99 seconds. The model becomes the first passenger EV to use CATL’s swap tech, previously available only in taxis.
The battery options include several versions under CATL’s new modular system —
- #20 LFP: 42 kWh, 400 km range
- #20 NCM: 52 kWh, 500 km range
- #25 LFP: 56 kWh, 500 km range
- #25 NCM: 70 kWh, 600 km range
Aion UT Super uses the #25 battery pack (54 kWh), delivering up to 500 km CLTC range.
Compact Dimensions, Urban-Focused Design
The UT Super is a five-seater hatchback measuring 4,270 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,575 mm high, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase — ideal for city driving with ample cabin space.
Affordable Pricing
- ¥89,900 (approx. ฿450,000) with battery included
- ¥49,900 (approx. ฿250,000) with battery lease option
- Launch offer: ¥85,900 (with battery) or ¥45,400 (battery lease)
This competitive pricing positions the UT Super as an accessible, entry-level EV for young Chinese consumers.
GAC x CATL x JD.com: Powerhouse Collaboration
Under the partnership, GAC Aion leads vehicle production, CATL provides advanced battery technology, and JD.com handles digital marketing, customer data, and after-sales support through its vast e-commerce platform.
Expanding CATL’s Battery Swap Network
As of November 8, CATL operates over 800 battery swap stations across China and plans to reach 1,000 by year-end. The company aims for 2,500 stations across 120 cities by 2026, reinforcing infrastructure for EV users.
Market Outlook
Despite recent slowdowns — with GAC Aion selling 28,199 vehicles in October, down 26% YoY — the company expects the UT Super to reignite demand. From January to October, cumulative sales reached 209,615 units, down 20.87% year-on-year.
Conclusion
With its rapid battery-swap system, compact design, and budget-friendly pricing, the Aion UT Super represents a major leap for GAC Aion’s EV lineup — blending convenience, innovation, and affordability to capture the next wave of Chinese EV buyers.
